Now there came to Him [Jesus] some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection), and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should marry the wife and raise up children to his brother. “Now there were seven brothers, and the first took a wife and died childless, and the second and the third married her; and in the same way, all seven died, leaving no children.

“Finally, the woman died also. “In the resurrection, therefore, which one’s wife will she be? For all seven had married her. “Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.”But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, and the god of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. “Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for all live to Him.” (Lk. 20:27-38 )

Our Lord, this Scripture is Your Word to us. Holy Spirit, enable us to offer up the words of our hearts in response.

All praise be to You, O Lord. You are the resurrection and the life, the God who raises up dry bones, the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. You are the creator and giver of life. All life is in Your hands.

My Lord, our hearts break for the Sadducees. I know that Your heart breaks for the Sadducees. How tragic to believe that life ends at the grave. Nothing after. And they are proud that they are so intelligent. They actually believe they can outsmart the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Surely Satan has blinded their eyes. But so has pride and unbelief. Lord, this dialogue with the Sadducees comes only days after the resurrection of Lazarus. The evidence was right before their faces and they did not want it. Why? Probably, pride. They would have to have taken all their brilliant intellectualism and laid it at your feet and admitted they were wrong. And then worship You.

Lord, there are many Sadducees today. Many famous and seemingly brilliant people believe life ends at the grave. They will not look at the evidence of Your resurrection. They do not want to. When they go to a funeral they are like those who eat a mint. For a few moments the mint exists and then it is gone forever. Gone. Period. Lord, how do such people face death?

Lord, by Your grace I am not a Sadducee. I believe You are the resurrection and the life! You have promised, “Because you live, I shall live also!” You are our hope. You are our resurrection and life!

And precious Redeemer, how we love You. You are alive. We shall see Your face!
